GOVERNMENT EULOGISES FORMER CABINET MINISTER KALOMBO MWANSA

THE LATE FORMER CABINET MINISTER IN THE MMD GOVERNMENT PROFESSOR KALOMBO MWANSA HAS BEEN EULOGISED AS AN ACADEMICIAN OF IMPEACABLE RECORD, AN EXPERT AT CRIMINAL LAW AND A SEASONED POLITICIAN.

SPEAKING AT THE FUNERAL REQUIEM SERVICE HELD AT THE CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY CROSS IN LUSAKA YESTERDAY, DEFENCE MINISTER DAVIES CHAMA SAID PROFESSOR MWANSA WAS A HUMBLE AND TRUE SON OF ZAMBIA.

PROF MWANSA PASSED AWAY IN THE EARLY HOURS OF SUNDAY, 15TH MARCH, 2020 AT HIS HOME IN STATE LODGE, LUSAKA.  HE WAS ACCORDED AN OFFICIAL FUNERAL BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT, MR EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU IN RECOGNITION OF THE NUMEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS THAT HE MADE TO THE COUNTRY.

“ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT, THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA AND INDEED ON MY OWN BEHALF, I CONVEY MY SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO THE WIDOW, MRS. HEATHER MWANSA, THE CHILDREN AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY ON THE LOSS OF A DEAR FRIEND AND COMPATRIOT”, SAID MR CHAMA.

THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE, WHO WAS THE GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE AT THE OFFICIAL FUNERAL, SAID GOVERNMENT HAD RECEIVED THE NEWS OF THE DEATH OF HON. PROF. MWANSA WITH A GREAT SENSE OF SADNESS AS IT WAS SUDDEN.

MR CHAMA SAID HON.PROF.MWANSA HAD AN ILLUSTROUS CAREER IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE WHICH BEGUN IN 1979 WHEN HE JOINED THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA SCHOOL OF LAW. IN 1993 PROF MWANSA WAS APPOINTED PERMANENT SECRETARY IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS BY PRESIDENT FREDERICK CHILUBA.  HE ALSO SERVED AS PERMANENT SECRETARY IN CHARGE OF ADMINISTRATION AT CABINET OFFICE AND DEPUTY SECRETARY TO THE CABINET IN CHARGE OF ADMINISTRATION BETWEEN 1998 AND 2002.

CHAMA NOTED THAT HONOURABLE PROF. MWANSA’S RISE IN THE GOVERNMENT WAS EXCEPTIONAL. HE WAS ELEVATED FROM THE POSITION OF DEPUTY SECRETARY TO THE CABINET TO A NOMINATED MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT IN JULY 2002 AND IMMEDIATELY APPOINTED MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS BY PRESIDENT LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA.

PROF. MWANSA ALSO SERVED AS CABINET MINISTER IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS, MINISTRY OF MINES AND MINERALS DEVELOPMENT AND MINISTRY OF DEFENCE BETWEEN 2005 AND 2011.

MR CHAMA FURTHER NOTED THAT DURING HIS TOUR OF DUTY IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE, PROF. KALOMBO MWANSA CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROGRESSIVE POLICIES SUCH AS THE PUBLIC SECTOR REFORM PROGRAMME THAT TURNED AROUND THE FUNCTIONING AND PERFORMANCE OF MINISTRIES ACROSS THE GOVERNMENT.

THE DEFENCE MINISTER SAID GOVERNMENT WAS SADDENED TO LOSE SUCH A COMMITTED SON OF ZAMBIA.  HE WAS HOWEVER ELATED THAT THAT PROF. MWANSA HAD LEFT BEHIND AN AMAZING LEGACY OF HARDWORK, SELFLESSNESS, COMMITMENT TO DUTY, INTEGRITY AND LOYALTY. HE URGED THE MOURNERS IN ATTENDANCE TO EMULATE THE PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE OF PROF. MWANSA.

THE REQUIEM CHURCH SERVICE WAS ATTENDED BY THE SPEAKER OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY DR PATRICK MATIBINI, SC , THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE PATRIOTIC FRONT PARTY MR DAVIES CHAMA, CABINET MINISTERS, FORMER VICE PRESIDENTS MR KAVINDELE AND DR NEVERS MUMBA, SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, FORMER CABINET AND DEPUTY MINISTERS WHO SERVED IN THE MMD GOVERNMENT.

THE LATE PROF. MWANSA WAS BURIED AT HIS FARM IN MIKANGO ALONG LEOPARDS HILL ROAD IN CHONGWE.
