Zambians across the nation observe Heroes and Unity Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives during Zambia’s struggle for independence. In a heartfelt address, President Hakainde Hichilema called upon the nation to remember and celebrate the founders who fought tirelessly against colonialism to secure the country’s freedom.
President Hichilema paid tribute to the gallant national football team that tragically perished off the coast of Gabon, the armed forces serving in peacekeeping missions abroad, and the first responders, doctors, nurses, and health workers who risked their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and the cholera outbreak.
The president also recognized the farmers who, despite the severe drought, utilized ox-drawn carts, wheelbarrows, and other means of transportation to bring water to their fields, ensuring the nation remained fed.
Furthermore, President Hichilema acknowledged the numerous unsung heroes whose contributions, though not widely recognized, have significantly impacted the nation.
“May God bless their heroism and inspire us all to emulate their courage and selflessness in our own ways,” said President Hichilema. “May we strive to be heroes in our own right, in our various capacities, and may God continue to bless the Republic of Zambia.”
This Heroes and Unity Day, Zambians are reminded of the enduring spirit of unity and sacrifice that has shaped the nation, and are encouraged to embody these values in their daily lives
